Klassikale leesplank.,  [ AAP -NOOT - MIES ] Wolters., Groningen., Hoogeveen., C.Jetses, [ aprox. 1932 / 1950 ]

Class Primer. Big size wooden frame with 17 colored square / rectangular pictures mounted on cardboard and a set of letters also mounted on cardboard. This primer was used in schools. Each pupil would have a similar primer on his desk ( small size pinewood ( 21,5 x 30 x 1Cm. ) with the same pictures mounted and also the same letters.  The teacher could use the class primer to show how the pupils should form the words. This class primer was used after 1932 because the boy - WIM - is not wearing a cap. On the older issue he had a cap. After 1932 it was not accepted wearing caps in the classroom. Around 1950 this form of primer was replaced by a wooden frame with loose cardboard pictures to be placed on ridges. The same for the letters. In fact the letters from the primer above were once used this way. ( not the discolering on the bottom of each letter.

It is hard to find any complete class primer because these items were disposed of when the teaching system changed.  This example is in good condition and very decorative.  Small part of the lower left side of the frame is missing also the bottom ridge is split. The system “Hoogeveen” was one of the more popular methods for teaching reading and writing. Many older people still know the text by head. “aap, noot, mies, wim, ……duif, schapen. Also the illustrator C. Jetses is well known for his charming style.  Allong with this method there were series of small reading and exercise booklets, also illustrated by C. Jetses.

After learning how to spell this advanced set was used for teaching the making of sentences.

Vertelplaat. School-chart used with the reading system described above. This chart depicts all the characters and items used on the primer.

Usually issued on cardboard, after the 2e WW the linen version became more popular.
